In the 1st century BC, Ephesus was the second-largest city in the world after Rome. It had a population of over 250,000 in the Roman Empire. Ephesus, which was entirely built with marble from start to finish, is also a port city. The reason people began settling in these lands between 6000 and 8000 BC is because it had a coastline along the Aegean Sea, meaning it was a port city. Its development as a center of maritime trade became the beginning of its fame, which continued for centuries.
Some of the main highlights include: the Magnesia Gate, the Great Theater, the Eastern Gymnasium and the State Agora Baths, the Upper Agora (State Agora) and Basilica, the Odeon, the Prytaneion, the Temple of Domitian, the Pollio Fountain, the Memmius Monument, the Curetes Street, the Heracles Gate, the Trajan Fountain, the Terrace Houses, the Varius Baths, the Public Latrine (Latrina), the House of Love, the Temple of Hadrian, the Stoa of Alytarkhus, the Octagon, the Heroon, the Celsus Library, the Commercial Agora and the South Gate, the Marble Street, the Harbor Street (Arcadiane), the Theater Gymnasium, the Virgin Mary Church Ruins, and the Harbor Baths.
Today, Ephesus, which is visited for its ancient city ruins, is actually the third Ephesus. A total of five Ephesus cities were established. One was built at the foot of Ayasuluk Hill, another around the Temple of Artemis, and the one we visit today is the third Ephesus. The fourth Ephesus is the settlement around the castle, and the fifth is the modern town of Selçuk. During this tour, we will visit the city ruins found in the Ephesus Ancient City. Other tourist sites in the area include the St. John Basilica, the House of the Virgin Mary, Sirince Village.
