On our tour, we will explore the enchanting historical streets of the Ancient City of Ephesus with our professional guide. Ephesus is an ancient city famous worldwide for its historical significance. It reached its peak during the Roman period. It was built entirely by the Memers. After the Artemis cult, it also hosted the early years of Christianity to a great extent. One of the main reasons it was such an important place in ancient times was that it was also a significant commercial port. After a major earthquake, the distance from the coastline increased. It used to operate as a Port City. Because it was a popular destination, it played an important role in the spread of Christianity. After exploring all the historical traces of this place in the Ancient City of Ephesus, our guide will take you by vehicle to the St. John Basilica, which is just a 5-minute drive away. After the visit to the St. John Basilica, we will head to the village of Sirince, which is only 10 minutes away by car.
The development of the village of Sirince dates back to the 1st century. The first believers of Ephesus had fled to the village of Sirince to escape from the prosecutors. Sirince remained a Greek Orthodox village until the end of World War I. In 1924, a population exchange agreement was made between Greece and Turkey. After this agreement, Turks living in Greece and Greeks living in Turkey were exchanged. This migration was a forced migration in both countries after World War I.
The official name change of the village of Sirince took place during the early days of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. Before, the village was called 'Cirkince' (meaning 'ugly'), and later it was changed to 'Sirince' (meaning 'beautiful'). Until recently, agriculture was the main source of livelihood in this village. Due to its unique history and incredible beauty, Sirince has become a popular tourist destination, frequently featured in documentaries, travel programs, and various research. The Church of St. John the Baptist is located in Sirince. The Churchof St. Demetrius is also a church situated on a hill at the entrance of Sirince. At the end of our tour, our private vehicle will take you to the previously agreed-upon location
