The Ancient City of Ephesus took its place in history as a religiously active city from the Prehistoric period to the end of the Roman period. As a result of the excavations that started in the second half of the 19th century and continue until today, Ephesus has become an area where many traces of divine worship are found. As we all know, Ephesus played a major role in the spread of Christianity. M.S. Starting from the 1st century, well-known Christians such as St. John and St. Paul visited Ephesus and won many Christians by opposing the Artemis cults. It is even believed that St. John and the Virgin Mary spent their last years in Ephesus. Today, the house of Virgin Mary and the tomb of John can still be visited.

Today, although some scholars still question its source, it is thought that the book of the new testament is a letter written to Christians in Ephesus. Ephesus is mentioned many times in the New Testament.  His book MS. It is thought to have been written in the 60th year. Not every Ephesian at that time was tolerant to St. Paul's Christian message. There is even mention of an uprising started by a man named Demetrious in the 19th chapter of the book 'Acts of the Elite'. Demetrious, who made silver coins bearing the image of Artemis, attacked the faith of St. Paul.  The main reason for Demetrious's attitude was his concern that the Christian faith would harm his trade in Ephesus.  The disciples of St. Pazlus and the Ephesian officials stood against Demetrious and eventually made Christianity the official faith of the city.

Demetrious took advantage of the fact that many merchants like himself were unable to sell the silver models of the Temple of Artemis, and actually influenced people purely commercially. The fact that people joined the St. Paul congregation and burned their spell books, worth hundreds of dollars today, shows that their fears were justified. After Christianity was accepted as the official religion, St. Paul held religious teachings in the Auditorium known as Tirana.  Timothy, one of St. Paul's students, was eventually appointed as the young leader of the Ephesus church.  The church in Ephesus is a very proselytizing church and many churches in the region were established thanks to the Ephesus Church.  For example, the brother named Epaphras founded the church communities of Colosse, Hierapolis and probably Leodicea. With his duty at the Tiranus school, St. Paul brought the believers in Ephesus to a deep knowledge of theology and holy books. When we look at Paul's A.D. He shows this in the letter he wrote to the people in Ephesus from the Roman prison in 62 BC.

Like St. Paul, St. John also lived in Ephesus.  Hz. It is known that Jesus entrusted his mother to St. John.  He was one of the pioneers in the spread of Christianity in Ephesus.  St. John worked in Ephesus and added many believers to his community. St. John, who settled on Ayasuluk hill in the Selçuk district of Izmir and taught Christianity to the people of Ephesus, died in Ephesus at the age of about 100 and was buried here according to his will.  Ephesus was one of the places frequented by believers for pilgrimage in the early Christian periods.  On the tomb of St. John, A.D. A mausoleum was built around 300 BC and remained as a wooden-roofed Basilica for about 50 years.  St. John's Basilica became unusable because Ephesus was subjected to a major earthquake in the 6th century. In place of the basilica, which was destroyed between 527 and 567, a new church with a dome, suitable for the pilgrimage plan, was built by the Emperor of that period, Justinianus, and his wife Theodra.

After the people of Ephesus completely moved to Ayasuluk after the 7th century, ST. John's Church replaced the old Episcopal church in Ephesus and was considered a pilgrimage Church.  From that time until today, it has been considered an important pilgrimage center for the Orthodox community.  ST. Services are held every year in St. John's Church according to the Christian faith.
